Ethiopia is reported to have one of the largest populations of orphans, as millions don’t have parents.

One KOTA Territory firefighter and his wife spent two years working to adopt a baby from that country.

Wednesday, Andrew and Jodi Rasmusson finally brought home baby Hugh. Waiting anxiously in the Rapid City Regional Airport, big brother Charlie Rasmusson scanned the runway for the right plane. After being duped once by a plane that didn’t have his family, he jumped up and down at the sight of his mom and dad outside.

Crouching behind an airport wall, Charlie waited for Jodi and Andrew to walk out of the exit before leaping out and surprising them. After years of hard work, and a 30-hour trip, Jodi and Andrew have finally made it back home to Charlie with their new one-year-old boy. “Approximately – I want to say four million orphans – in Ethiopia, and so we just felt compelled to reach out there, ” said Jodi.

She says Hugh was abandoned without a family. “We’re so blessed he’s going to be part of our family,” said Jodi.
